Stockton is an ethnically and culturally diverse community which continues to grow steadily. With a population of 280,000, Stockton is considered the 13th largest city in California. 60 miles to the west is San Francisco Bay, and 83 miles west is San Francisco itself. The city is in a relatively central location, with Sacramento located just 45 miles to the south. The San Joaquin Delta waterway unites the San Joaquin and Sacramento Rivers to San Francisco Bay.
Recently, the city of Stockton has undergone a huge economic expansion with a special focus on revitalizing the downtown area. There are several projects either currently planned or being built, such as apartments, housing, retail, a hotel, a baseball stadium, and an indoor arena. The arena will host four major sports teams: Stockton Ports Minor Baseball, Stockton Lightning Area2 Foot Ball, Stockton Thunder Hockey, and the California Cougars Soccer. At the gateways of the city, Stockton is building a variety of retail and entertainment centers. In 2003 the City Centre Cinemas, the 16 screen movie theatre, was developed.
Originally, the economy in Stockton was almost exclusively agriculturally based. However, as time has passed the city has diversified, with telecommunication and manufacturing plants becoming more common. The strong ties with agriculture will gradually become more and more important as the focus on attempting to find a renewable energy increases.
Inexpensive land, as well as the proximity to the state and interstate, are some of the main reasons why companies like Duraflame, Pac-West Telecommunications, and Golden State Lumber Company have built their regional operations in Stockton. The city is also perfect for those companies based on renewable energy; one of the largest receivers of wind turbines is the Port of Stockton. There is an extremely efficient and reliable rail system in the city, which helps to make the distribution of products go smoothly. Even with the bio diesel and ethanol plants built near the Port, there is still over 2000 acres of free space available
Stockton is currently working on developing green sustainable resources. High Schools and secondary educational institutions are working together with the local government to educate the population about the renewable energy industry with the hopes that a solution to the quickly diminishing supply of oil can be found.
